"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15, ESV).
Literacy seems to be a buzz term that is popular these days. It refers to the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and make sense of the world. A current dictionary entry states that literacy is the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential. There are many types of literacy such as: digital literacy, media literacy, financial literacy, visual literacy, scientific literacy, and art literacy, just to name a few.
With all the focus and attention on literacy, what about the crucial importance of "Bible Literacy"? In the Biblical account of Mary, the mother of Jesus, at Jesus' birth, we see how she took in all the signs and wonders that surrounded her treasuring them in her heart. (See Luke 2:19) Like Mary God invites us to treasure His word in our hearts by becoming a faithful student of the Bible. Why not become a scholar of God's Word? The Bible opens God's signs and wonders to us. Committed study to His word opens your heart to His treasures and promises. Bible literacy is truly an essential element in our walk with God. Through our study into the Bible, we will discover the deeper meanings in Scripture as we see how all of the pieces and parts fit together to show us and assure us of His love, His forgiveness, His promises, and most importantly the salvation found in Jesus Christ. Why not become more literate in reading, writing, speaking and listening in a biblical way that allows us to communicate more effectively about Jesus and making more sense of the world with Him in it?
"Those who love Your instructions have great peace and do not stumble " (Ps.119:165, NLT).
Open your Bibles starting today and every day from now on so you too, may become 'Biblically literate'. See how God will show Himself to you, enrich your life in every way, and launch you into His plan for its fulfillment in your life.
Dear Father God, help us to become more faithful students of Your word. Instill in us hearts ready, willing , and eager to treasure Your word in our hearts. We praise You, Lord, for Your eternal truths and promises. Lord, fill us with a desire to discover more about Jesus throughout Your word. Help us to be scholars of Your word. Thank You for loving us like You do and for Jesus. In His name, we pray, Amen.
