Bucket List

Writer: Laurie KlimpleLaurie Klimple

"A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life],

But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them" (Prov.16;9, amp).

I often hear people say things regarding their "bucket list", their proverbial list of things and events they yearn to accomplish before they "kick the bucket" or pass on from this earth. It is quite interesting to discuss with others what they wish for or dream to achieve.

This made me think about my own 'bucket list' or goals I want to accomplish. It has been a long-term dream of mine to one day become a Master Gardener through the County Extension Agency. Plants and flowers of all kinds bring me great joy. I am always researching, studying, and admiring the beautiful creations of the Father. It truly amazes me at the varieties and uniqueness of the plants He created. It is also interesting to me that each one has certain requirements to thrive and to beautify. Each and every one requires: various soil preferences, different lighting requirements, climate preferences, fertilizing needs, varying water amounts, pest control needs, weeding, maintenance, and the list goes on. My own Master Gardener goal led me to think about God as I am learning to look for Him in every aspect of my life, both big and small. God is the Master Gardener of my soul. "I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser" (John 15:1). In my own words, He is the source of all life!

"For this very reason, applying your diligence [to the divine promises, make every effort] in [exercising] your faith to develop moral excellence, and in moral excellence, knowledge (insight, understanding), and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, steadfastness, and in your steadfastness, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly affection, and in your brotherly affection, [develop Christian] love [that is, learn to unselfishly seek the best for others and to do things for their benefit]" (2 Pet.1:5-7, amp). In these verses, I view the "Soul Soil of Faith" that produce the seven fruits of faith: moral excellence/virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly love, and Christian love. Each of these fruits are produced by the studying of God's word, tending and taking great care of what will grow from these fruits as they flourish in the hearts and souls of God's creations - us.

May we prioritize and put God's plans for our lives at the top of our own 'bucket list'. May we strive to be fruitful and allow our faith to manifest in Christ. Grow your faith deeper and abide in Him. Be fruitful, grow, and produce the virtues that God loves. Go and till the soil of your soul to receive what God sows in your heart. May you tend to that precious garden and grow what God has planted.

Father, God, Master Gardener of our souls, may we praise You this day for what You have sown into our hearts to grow and produce for You. May we flourish as we continue to grow in all that You have planned for us. We love and honor You, Father. In Jesus beautiful name, Amen.
