"He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5, Amp).
Today we will explore a little about the mercy of God. In the Bible, mercy is mentioned 296 times in the Old Testament, and 43 times in the New Testament. Mercy is defined as compassion or forgiveness show toward someone that does not deserve it, especially when it's within one's power to punish or harm them. God's mercy entails not giving us what we deserve. In scripture, we see that mercy and grace are usually coupled. Grace being the giving to someone what they don't deserve, and mercy is not giving someone what they indeed deserve.
"He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit" (Heb. 4:16, Amp).
God's mercy saves, redeems, and preserves all that it touches. Mercy is like rain that falls on the parched, dry desert land as it brings forth a myriad of new growth and revival.
"Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions" (Ps. 51:1, Amp).
As we realize the rarity of mercy in the world that surrounds us, we can see how God is generous with His. When our heart is thirsty, a bit dehydrated, and lacking, God quenches and restores the Spirit He placed within us. There is revival that takes place in us as we receive His mercy. God longs to extend His mercy to revive our thirsty souls.
If you ever find that your soul is thirsty and lacking in any way, reach out to God. Allow His mercy to bring about the necessary restoration you are needing to be refreshed.
"Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant and boundless mercy has caused us to be born again [that is, to be reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] to an ever-living hope and confident assurance through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (I Pet. 1:3, Amp).
"Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life,
And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord" (Ps.23:6, Amp).
Father, we don't deserve Your mercy nor Your grace that You richly bestow upon us as Your children. Forgive our disobedience and fill our thirsty souls with more of You. Restore our weary souls, Father. May we extend mercy and grace upon others as You do for us. We love You. In Jesus' merciful name, Amen.
